The imagery, geography and crafted detail behind the Coasty journey.
The journey combines real Earth imagery and geographic data with an illustrative café environment and digital characters. The café, façades, people and interactions are an authored scene, rather than a survey of the San Francisco location.
The café and street
Amazon Lumberyard Bistro © Amazon Lumberyard, distributed through NVIDIA ORCA. Godot port by Logan Preshaw; refinements by John James Gutib (Jamsers). Assets licensed under CC BY 4.0.
For Coasty, the exterior street sections were assembled, materials reconstructed, textures resized and encoded for the web, and meshes combined and compressed. Surrounding architecture was simplified while preserving the foreground café. Small items were removed from the featured tabletop. The source project’s music and audio are not used.
Neighborhood geography
Building footprints © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0.
The derived dataset projects footprints into local coordinates and excludes those that intersect the illustrative café. Heights use mapped values where available, mapped floor counts otherwise, and an illustrative default when neither is supplied. Façades and windows are modeled.
Aerial imagery and terrain
San Francisco aerial photographs come from the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP), provided by USDA, USGS and The National Map. Images were exported from the official service in natural color; acquisition dates vary across the mosaic.
Elevation data comes from the USGS 3D Elevation Program (3DEP). Samples were converted to a local elevation grid for the terrain mesh. Both data sources are public domain.
Earth, clouds and the bay
The Earth surface uses NASA Blue Marble: Next Generation, July 2004. The 21,600 × 10,800 source was downsampled to 8K for desktop and 4K for mobile, preserving its geographic registration and natural detail. Image by Robert Simmon and Reto Stockli, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, based on MODIS data.
The approach through the western United States and California adds geographically registered Blue Marble: Next Generation imagery from NASA Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS), followed by Landsat WELD v3.1 annual true-color surface reflectance from 2000. The regional coastal image preserves Landsat land and estuary detail and uses aligned Blue Marble ocean imagery to fill acquisition seams and missing coverage. These NASA and USGS photographic sources are public domain; the images were resampled and encoded for the web.
The Blue Marble cloud composite is by Reto Stockli, with enhancements by Robert Simmon, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The landing page uses 4K and 2K textures; the platform globe retains the original 8K cloud detail on desktop and uses 4K on mobile. It is a 2002 composite, not current weather.
The platform globe’s night lights use the NASA Black Marble 2016 grayscale composite, created from Suomi NPP VIIRS observations. NASA Earth Observatory image by Joshua Stevens, using data from Miguel Román, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The global source was resampled to 4K and 2K for the web; the renderer adds a warm tint and reveals the lights on the night side. This is a historical composite, not live activity.
The regional bay image is “Bay Blues”, acquired by Landsat 8 on April 16, 2013. NASA Earth Observatory images by Jesse Allen and Robert Simmon, using data provided by USGS and NASA. These credits do not imply NASA endorsement.
Digital people
Character models are adapted from Microsoft Rocketbox, copyright © 2020 Microsoft, under the MIT License. Sam and Maya use the Male_Adult_07 and Female_Adult_07 models.
The models were converted to GLB, with embedded textures, relaxed standing poses, a reduced facial animation set and materials adjusted for browser rendering. They are articulated digital avatars with photographic textures. Character names and interactions are illustrative.
Daylight reference
Urban Courtyard 02 HDR environment by Sergej Majboroda, published by Poly Haven under CC0, supplies the scene’s photographic daylight reference.
